Guy Tremblay joined Heenan Blaikie in 1977 when the firm was a small but dynamic team that has since proven itself. His legal expertise complements his natural business acumen, which is why Mr. Tremblay was co-managing partner from 1997 to 2011 as well as a member of our firm’s Executive Committee and National Management Committee.
Over the years, Mr. Tremblay has built a reputation for excellence in employment law and labour relations. His extensive experience was acquired before the Quebec Labour Relations Board, the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse, grievance arbitration boards, the Commissaire de l’industrie de la construction, and common law courts. He has been at the heart of many significant court cases that have shaped labour law. A seasoned negotiator and shrewd strategist, he has been a key player in many labour disputes affecting private companies, and regularly takes part in concluding collective agreements.
Mr. Tremblay is very much involved with several associations, including being a member of the Ordre des administrateurs agréés du Québec and the Ordre des conseillers en ressources humaines et en relations industrielles agréés du Québec of which he was also syndic for nearly 15 years. He sits on a few boards of directors and was President of the Canadian Association of Counsel to Employers in 2011-2012. He was also elected by the business community as chairman of the Federation of Quebec Chambers of Commerce in 2001-2002.
For many years, Mr. Tremblay has been recognized as a leader in labour law in the Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada, published by Lexpert/American Lawyer Media. Moreover, since 2011, he has been recognized as one of Canada’s leading lawyers in the area of labour and employment law in The Best Lawyers in Canada (Woodward/White). Best Lawyers also named him 2014 Montreal Lawyer of the Year in labour and employment law. In addition, in the annual survey conducted by Lexpert he is regularly ranked as an expert in labour and employment law. In 2011, Mr. Tremblay was a recipient of the Québec Bar’s honorary Emeritus Lawyer title. He has been recognized in the 2012 and 2013 editions of the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory in labour relations.
To honour Guy Tremblay’s years of service as national co-managing partner, the firm has created the Guy-Tremblay Heenan Blaikie bursary. This $5,000 bursary will be handed out annually to the undergraduate student in Université Laval’s Faculty of Law who stands out by the quality of his or her academic record as well as his or her leadership.
